Artist Interview: Kevin Bordine Band
Tell us about yourself and your music
We are a four piece Christian Rock (or is it Rock band who are Christians…either way…) and we have been together for about 5 years. We started out with me (Kevin) writing and recording the songs and then handing them to the rest of the band to learn for gigs. They were mostly Christian Rock mixed with Praise and Worship. About a year and a half ago our outlook changed (well, mine more so) and it was decided to be more band oriented instead of me as a solo artist with this backing band. We all love bands like the Foo Fighters and Nirvana, as well as more classic rock like KISS and Chicago, and a lot of groups in between. So we decided to let our influence flags fly and play what came out of our hearts and souls. It has been a fun and exciting journey so far.
Talk to us more about your latest release
We released “Loose Ends” in September of 2016, and it’s a 5 song EP of music born out of rehearsals beginning in January of 2016. Prior to then, I had written and recorded the music (mostly Christian rock and Praise and Worship originals) but was feeling a strong leading to make the future more about the band than myself. So whenever I had a song idea we would run them in rehearsal until we felt we could faithfully capture their essence, as a band. We are incredibly proud of how the songs turned out and are jumping on the next batch of songs in the same fashion, with musical and lyric input from all four of us. The songs from “Loose Ends” are a mix of modern rock, indy and alternative, with a dash of classic rock thrown in for good measure- which encompasses our influences. From the first single “Let It Get Away” with its Foo Fighters meets Three Doors Down vibe it kicks off the project with a bang. Next is “One Foot” which is more more classic rock in its influence but has a touch of alternative mixed in. The title track “Loose Ends” is an uptempo rocker about trying to mend the few loose ends of life before the whole thing comes unraveled. “One Right Move” is a statement in a Foo Fighters flavor about the world we live in today, where one false move could take us down but one right one changes everything. Last is “Should’ve Known Better (In The End)”, sorta like arena rock in its style and talks about getting hopes up and having things fall apart and feeling like you should know better than to believe things will turn out great.
What inspired you to write this release?
Partly the above stated point of letting our influences come to the forefront, but also partly from some of the experiences that were going on at the time. Seeing friends that got into another circle of friends and then turn their backs on their beliefs and fooling themselves into thinking they hadn’t changed influenced “Let It Get Away”. There was a period of time that I became frazzled with feeling like I had too many plates spinning, causing my psyche to be a little worse for wear, so I wrote “Loose Ends”. And “Should’ve Known Better (In The End)” is the honest feeling I was internalizing when things I hoped would happen fell through and it seemed “the light at the end of the tunnel was a train around the bend” so to speak. So there were many ingredients that went into the recipe for this album…
Any plans to release a video?
We would love to, and are saving our pennies with the goal in mind to make a video. We feel there are ideas for all five songs on the EP. But we want to do it right and not half- way so we will take our time and do it right.
Any plans to hit the road?
So far there is nothing on the horizon but we are looking forward to our calendar filling up as this new year takes shape.
As an indie artist, how do you brand yourself and your music to stand out from the rest of the artists out there?
I would have to say there aren’t a lot of bands saying they have a mix of indy/ alternative with modern rock tendencies combined with classic rock feel and honesty. And we can only write what we feel in our gut and know in our hearts which makes our voice unique to any other.
Who have you been listening to lately?
Well as always, the Foo Fighters; lately My Chemical Romance; Cheap Trick; Journey; Lincoln Brewster; Shinedown; Stone Temple Pilots; Jimmy Eat World;
Tell us about your passions
Family is huge to us…time we spend with family is cherished so that gets us excited and happy. Also movies, mostly of the Marvel and DC Comics movies but not exclusively. And for some of us, sports and wrestling (WWE) and interests as well.
What else is happening next in your world?
Writing and rehearsing for the next project as well as learning some great cover songs for gigs…just working our behinds off to be ready for whatever 2017 has in store for the Kevin Bordine Band!!!
Thanks for an awesome interview, Kevin!
